Making cute trick or treat bags has been on my to do list for several years now, but this year I can finally check it off my list!
I could not resist when I found the Jeepers Creepers fabric at my local fabric store, it is so much fun, and it glows in the dark how cool is that. (The fabric is by Blank Quilting by the way). My kids will be haunting in style this year!
For this project, I made a very basic tote bag and embellished it with ric-rac. Here is what I used. It takes 2/3 of a yard of both the outer and the lining fabric to make three bags.
Cutting List
Outer Fabric (2)- 12" by 13.5" rectangles of fabric
Lining fabric (2)- 12" by 13.5" rectangles of fabric
Fusible Fleece (2)- 12" by 13.5" rectangles of fabric
Cotton Webbing (2) 12.5" Pieces for handles
Ric-Rac 2- 12" Yard Piece
After all of your pieces have been cut, iron the fusible fleece onto the outer fabric. Fusible Fleece is optional, but I love how fusible fleece makes projects feel thicker, and sturdier. Sew the Ric Rac onto the outside of the outer fabric. I sewed my pieces about 3.5" below the top edge.
On both the outer fabric, and the lining fabric, with right sides together, sew a 1/4 inch long seem along the sides and bottom of the bag. Leave a 3" opening in the somewhere in the lining fabric, to turn the bag right side out.
Tack the handles onto the outer fabric where you would like them to go. I pin it with pins, then sew it to secure it in place with a couple rows of stitches.
Using the three inch opening in the lining fabric, turn the bag right side out. Top -stitch the top edge of the bag. Sew the opening in the lining shut... and you are finished!
This is a simple bag, that looks professional, because you do not see any seems when you open the bag.
Happy Haunting!
