This is one of these recipes I don't make often, and when I do make them, I think, I should make these more often. Soft Pretzels are so easy to make, my children love to help, they are low in fat and sugar, and you can be super creative with them. I decided to glam them up Saint Patric's Day style this week!
I got this Recipe out of Goodness Gracious Cook Book by Roxie Kelly. This recipe book was a wedding gift from my Aunt! Let me tell you this book is as beautiful as it is yummy! I think I have tried just about every recipe in this book, and they are all fabulous!
Soft Pretzels
2 1/4 tsp yeast (or 1-1/4 oz package)
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 tsp salt
1 Tbls sugar
3-4 cups flour (recipe says 4, but I only used 3)
1 egg, beaten
Flavorings such as course salt, cinnamon and sugar, parmesan cheese, etc.
Preheat Oven to 425 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in the warm water (I let mine sit until frothy, about ten min). Add the salt and the sugar. Blend in the flour. Knead the dough until smooth (I use my Kitchenaid).
Form into twists or sticks. I found I had better luck with this if I rolled the dough out into long strips, and then twisted to form a tube. We marbles some green food coloring into our twists to give them St. Patrick's Day flare. We shaped ours into shamrock shapes, they are not perfect, but they were a lot of fun.
Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Brush the pretzel with the egg. Garnish with toppings. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until lightly golden brown.

I've made these three times since this post. My fav so far is to stuff a pretzel stick with a chunk off sharp cheddar before baking. Yumm
